Which kind of machine can spray fireproofing coating?
Choose fireproofing equipment from the exact material’s approved application method. Thin-film intumescent paint, cementitious sprayed fire-resistive material and reactive two-component coatings can require different pumps, hoses and applicators.
Machines capable of spraying fireproofing materials (such as Spray-Applied Fire Resistive Materials [SFRM], intumescent coatings, or cementitious fireproofing mortar) must be robust, high-power systems capable of handling thick, abrasive, and high-viscosity materials. The primary types of sprayers used for this application include:
- Hydraulic Airless Sprayers (Heavy-Duty Piston Sprayers):
- Best for: High-density cementitious fireproofing mortars, heavy intumescent coatings, and high-output job sites.
- Why it works: Powered by heavy-duty hydraulic motors, these machines deliver massive fluid output, high operating pressures, and can pull thick materials over long hose lengths without stalling.
- Required Tip Size: 0.035 – 0.055″ (e.g., 535, 543, 649, 653) depending on the density and thickness of the fireproofing coating.
- Spray Pressure: 200 – 270 BAR (approx. 2900 – 4000 PSI) to effectively atomize and propel heavy intumescent or cementitious materials.
- Rotor-Stator Screw Pumps (Progressive Cavity Pumps):
- Best for: Cementitious and gypsum-based fireproofing mortars, fire-retardant plasters, and thick acoustic or thermal insulation sprays.
- Why it works: They use a rotating steel screw (rotor) inside a rubber sleeve (stator) to push material continuously in a smooth, non-pulsating flow rather than using high-pressure piston beats. This prevents material packing and ensures consistent delivery of heavy mortars.
- Nozzle Size / Diameter: 8 mm to 14 mm (or specialized mortar spray nozzles, as these systems typically use larger industrial gun orifices rather than standard airless tips).
- Operating / Material Pressure: 20 – 40 BAR (approx. 300 – 600 PSI). Because these are low-pressure volume pumps rather than high-pressure airless systems, they rely on a separate external air compressor (hooked up at the spray gun) to atomize the mortar as it exits the nozzle.
- Heavy-Duty Pneumatic / Air-Assisted Sprayers:
- Best for: Specialized structural steel fireproofing and high-build intumescent epoxy coatings.
- Why it works: Powered by compressed air, these units can handle extreme viscosities and integrate external atomizing air at the gun tip for superior control over heavy protective coatings.
- Tip Size: 0.027-0.043″ (e.g., 527, 635, 643) for high-build intumescent epoxies and specialized fire-retardant paints.
- Fluid Pressure: 150 – 220 BAR (approx. 2200 – 3200 PSI), paired with an external atomizing air pressure of 4 – 7 BAR (approx. 60 – 100 PSI) at the gun for precise finish control.
First identify the material family
| Material | Equipment questions |
|---|---|
| Intumescent coating | Which airless setup, tip, filtration, pressure and film build does the supplier approve? |
| Cementitious or aggregate-containing SFRM | Which delivery pump, aggregate capacity, hose and spray lance are specified? Is air required at the nozzle? |
| Reactive two-component system | Is premixing permitted or is an approved proportioning, heating and mixing system required? |
Do not select by motor power alone
Check output with the material, supported nozzle, fluid passages, abrasion resistance and working pressure. A high-wattage paint sprayer is not automatically suitable for coarse aggregate. An ordinary texture gun is not automatically an approved fireproofing applicator.
Evaluate the complete installation
- Coating product, current application guide and project specification.
- Pump and seal compatibility with material and cleaner.
- Hose bore, total length, vertical rise and pressure rating.
- Gun or lance, nozzle, air supply where needed and filtration.
- Mixing, material supply, working time and cleaning arrangements.
Air-driven airless equipment uses air to drive the pump, not necessarily to atomise material at the tip. Keep that distinction clear when specifying the gun and compressed-air supply.
Where does the DP-340TK fit?
The DP-340TK SFRM sprayer is a model to assess for the intended material and configuration. The hydraulic pump range provides other configurations to evaluate. Neither listing replaces written confirmation of compatibility with the actual coating.
Separate spraying capability from fire performance
The required fire rating depends on the specified and correctly installed coating system, including substrate, primer, required thickness, curing and inspection. A uniform-looking sprayed layer or a successful machine demonstration is not a fire-performance approval.
Plan trial application, thickness checks and repairs under the project procedure. Do not thin or modify the material merely to pass it through available equipment. Relieve pressure before addressing a blockage; never open a pressurised hose coupling.
What should a quotation request include?
Send the exact material and application guide, required production, hose route, power and air supply, together with the project inspection requirements. This allows a useful equipment assessment before purchase.
