Why my paint sprayer starts up but does not draw in paint?
When the motor runs but paint will not enter the pump, start with material supply, the prime setting and suction-side sealing. If paint reaches the return line but not the gun, the fault is farther along the fluid path and needs a different check.
Important: power off the machine immediately if there’s no suction of the paint. keep running the machine without fluid entering inside will cause the damage / worn of the v-packing / gasket inside the fluid pump.
Identify the stage that fails

Check external causes first
- Confirm the suction inlet is fully submerged and there is enough material for uninterrupted feeding.
- Use the model’s startup instructions for prime/spray valve position and pressure-control setting. Do not use an arbitrary halfway valve position.
- After pressure relief and power isolation, clean the inlet strainer and inspect the suction tube.
- Check the correct gasket or O-ring, coupling and hose for damage. A vacuum leak can admit air without leaving a wet paint leak outside.
- Confirm the coating is approved for the sprayer and prepared according to its data sheet.
If Inlet ball or Outlet ball get stuck
Dried coating or storage residue can prevent an inlet or outlet valve from operating. You can slightly strike the housing with a wrench or insert a finger or improvised needle into an operating inlet. Relieve pressure before opening a valve assembly.
or you could lay down the machine, remove the suction tube, and pour a bottole of spring water into the suction valve / fluid pump directly. this will help you solve the problem also.
Do not confuse a blocked gun with poor suction
If the pump primes normally, inspect gun delivery using the manual’s safe procedure. A blocked filter or tip may stop spraying even when the suction system works. Never loosen a high-pressure fitting to see whether paint is present.
When to stop for service
Persistent failure after external checks may involve worn valve seats, packings, a prime valve or another pump fault. Hydraulic diaphragm machines also need their separate oil and bleeding checks. Do not run a dry pump indefinitely while trying to restore prime.
After use, clean the full fluid path and apply the specified storage protection. Unspecified lubricating oil is not a universal fluid-path storage product. Record the machine, coating, startup behaviour and return-flow result before requesting assistance.
