How to chose proper pneumatic airless pump for the painting application?

Choose a pneumatic airless pump by its working pressure and delivery at the required operating point, together with the available compressed-air supply. Pressure ratio is useful, but it is only one part of the selection.

What does 30:1 or 60:1 mean?

The ratio describes the nominal relationship between air-motor input pressure and fluid pressure. For example, 30:1 with 6 bar air gives a theoretical 180 bar fluid pressure. This is an illustration, not an instruction to set any pump to 6 bar: maximum air input, maximum fluid pressure and component ratings always apply.

Flowing pressure is affected by the pump’s operating characteristics and system losses. Multiplying the ratio by air pressure does not establish the pressure available at a distant spray gun while applying viscous paint.

Read pressure and flow together

Use the pump performance curve for the required material delivery. A high-ratio pump is not automatically higher-volume equipment. The original article listed ratios from 30:1 to 76:1 and different maximum outputs; those maxima should not be interpreted as simultaneous output at maximum pressure.

Check the compressor at the operating point

  • Confirm the air volume required at the chosen fluid output and pressure.
  • Compare with the compressor’s delivered capacity, not only its receiver size or motor rating.
  • Allow for other tools using the air supply and losses in lines, regulators and filters.
  • Provide the required clean-air treatment and avoid undersized supply hoses.

An inadequate supply can cause poor cycling and unstable spraying even when a static regulator gauge looks correct.

Match the coating and fluid path

Check the coating’s airless approval, viscosity, solids, abrasiveness and recommended tip. Zinc-rich paints, high-build epoxies and conventional topcoats impose different demands. Verify wetted materials, seals, filtration and cleaning compatibility. No ratio makes a pump suitable for “every heavy-duty paint.”

Then check hose bore, length, gun rating and number of guns. Multiple guns need sufficient total delivery under load. Use the lowest-rated component as the pressure limit for the assembled system.

What information should you send for selection?

Provide the coating product and data sheet, required delivery or daily consumption, hose route, gun count, available air pressure and delivered compressor capacity. Include any hazardous-area requirements; an air motor alone does not make an entire installation approved for explosive atmospheres.
